Tavsiye ederim.

Canım Kardeşim

Canım Kardeşim turned out to be sad. It is a slice of life story of two very close friends, who do not have regular jobs, live at a very poor neighbourhood and get by with small con jobs and are generally content with their lot in life despite their troubles. The little kid in the photo is the brother of the tall one. And when their father dies at night (probably due to a heart attack) the big guy now has to take care of the little dude who was not in his radar that much up to now. We see how they live and get by and one day the little guy's teacher calls them and wanted the kid checked out by a doctor since he is very dirty and constantly scratches. They took him to a bath house first and then to the doctor only to find out that he has leukemia with only one maybe two months to live. The little guy's heart's true desire is to have a television set. And we see how these two good friends try to make the last days of the kid very happy and obtain a TV to make his wish come true. It is very sad but not melodramatic. More like a slap in the face with each episode of social inequity and one misery after another told in a rather realistic manner.

Gülen Gözler is one of those films I watch during Ramadan to help pass the time and I didn't like it as much as I had the other films of this ilk. The reason for that is probably the majority of the family are scheming people who try to trick their authoritarian father who didn't hesitate to slap one of his daughters at one point in the film. Sener Sen was great though and the best part of the whole film.

Welcome

Welcome is a film I wanted to watch but couldn't since the disc I have purchased was faulty. And now that I'm over my Indian film craze, it is not that good a film however some parts made me laugh still.

Mad Men

Mad Men turned out to be very very good. So much so that since Netflix only had the 5 seasons I have watched the last 2 on line at a pirated site. I figured it would not be considered stealing since it is an old show now.

I loved it from the first season but for some reason didn't follow it up. This time though I was definitely hooked. The characters are interesting and I would have put it on top three if didn't end like that.

SPOILERS

First off all poor Betty, everybody smoked like a chimney but only she got the bad. I always felt that the show was cold towards her. Despite having similar inabilities as Don we inadverdantly sympathise with Don while dislike Betty.

I didn't like Peggy's ending either. The whole thing felt a bit forced for some reason (no fault of the actors) Peggy deserved a lot better in my opinion.

Roger got a very good deal. This man always ended up winning for some reason. He is not a bad person but I never really liked him. And I like Julia Ormond and how lovely she aged. Great lady and it was nice to see her character happy.

Now Pete also got it very good. Despite not being a very decent person, Pete is one of the characters I like best on the show and I was very happy for him.

Joan is someone I like too despite not agreeing with some of her choices. I loved it that she ended up a successful businesswoman and she didn't fall for the temptations of a good, lazy life with a nice man on hand, her child's future secure. She likes working and she chose to work. Good for her!

And Don. I don't agree with his ending. I mean I loved the way he realised that other people too feel the way he feels but his reaction was somehow felt fake. This man is not someone who can open up, but in the end, the great Don Draper (Dick) ended up in a hippy retreat Ohm'ing his way to happiness.

Despite the below par ending, I still loved the show and had a great time watching it. I highly recommend.

Ezel - Sezon 2 Final

Ezel 2 was not something I intended to watch. I liked the first season but thought the story ended in a high note and didn't need to go any further. However at Ramadan I like to watch a good Turkish TV show for some reason (It began with Muhtesem Yuzyıl last Ramadan). And Ezel ended earlier since I had already watched the first season. Our Turkish Edmond Dantes is protecting his mentor this time. The baddie is a horribly evil rich businessman with tight political, underground and other connections and our heroes are penniless with no strong force behind them. Our femme fatale is after her usual ways there is even a new love interest for our main lead. Then it all goes to hell (to paraphrase an acquitance of mine) This show ripped my heart apart with the last four episodes (each over one hour). I have almost cried as much as I did while watching Muhtesem Yuzyıl.

The Four

The Four is one of those rare occasions I have watched something illegally on line. I watched it on dailymotion so I'm not sure if it is definitely illegal but I suspect so. Well since I had watched The Four II and intended to watch the third and final film, I thought it would be better if I watched the first one. And it was kind of.. The first film was easily the best since the characters are all explained and I have finally found out what Soul Snatcher does that is so special and why the horny girl is like that. And Anthony Wong is good.

Osen

Osen turned out to be adorable and caused me a lot of tears (in a good way). I like Japanese food and I love the characters and their motivations and abilities.

Zenkai Girl

Zenkai Girl turned out to be a nice little drama with love and values and hard work and family and all that. It was entertaining and I love how J-Dramas don't go on forever.

My Boss, My Hero (TV Show)

My Boss, My Hero is a Japanese TV show adapted from a S.Korean film if I'm not mistaken. I have watched and liked the Korean film but TV show took the whole thing a step forward with that certain amount of quirk that is particular to Japanese shows. I have watched it on youtube and I highly recommend but only if you like that certain crazy :) I rarely don't and usually totally love it. And thank God it was like that here.

Shameless Season 7

Shameless Season 7 was very good as usual. I actually shed a few tears at the last episode.

Shameless Season 6

Shameless Season 6 was very good. I like Fiona and Ian best and I guess I dislike Lip and Debbie the worst. Frank is all in an "unbelieveable" category all by himself.

The Handmaiden

The Handmaiden is a milestone for me. Why? Because it is the first time I watched a film illegally knowing that I'm doing so. I felt really bad afterwards but nowadays there just is not any other format to watch films you want to watch. The dilemma is that they are right there, available at your fingertips and it makes no sense to wait for the dvd etc. to enjoy the viewing. I feel bad and worry that Mr. Wook and the production company will be waiting for me in the other world and even if they will not (for instance forgiving me for the tresspass in their intellectual property) will God forgive me? Is it really that important to watch a film right there and then (it has always been my film viewing weakness to want to watch/read stuff right there and then, curbed by lack of means, regional zone laws, living far from theaters that actually show them in the event that they are even released in my country. It was really hard to stand up against the dvd piracy but I somehow did it thank God and now I need to stand against this ease of availability. I'm actually more comfortable with TV series since they get their money and don't care that much about pirated stuff going around - and there simply is no other option if one wants to watch them. But films are different and Netflix just doesn't have the type of things that I want.

I guess I'll stop doing this since I feel awful. Curiously though I didn't feel these while viewing. Remorse hit me afterwards.

As for the film, it was not Mr. Wook's best effort. I read the novel which was very good (but then again I like Sarah Waters) with a lot more twists (that would probably need a TV series in order to put them all in) and this is yet another case of the book being better than the film.

At least he kept the feminist message and the actors were very good.
